After outscoring Martin the
previous 161-8 the last three seasons, nobody could have thought the
Indians could put on another clinic against Martin.
Guess again.
The Indians, gaining 414 yards on the game, all on the
ground, won a convincing 62-0 season over Martin, scoring an
opening victory at Indian Stadium in front of a capacity crowd in
attendance.
The Indians began the clinic with a 27-0 rout in the first quarter.
The Indians scoring rout started at the 8:34 mark of the first
quarter, as Gareth MacMillan took the handoff to the left side of
the field, going 38 yards for the Indian touchdown. The point after
attempt failed on a bad snap from the center to the holder and the
Indians led 6-0.
It took just over two minutes to score the second Indian touchdown,
when, having a short field to work with, Sergio Perez took the
handoff one yard off the right side for the Indian touchdown. Juan
Perez kicked his first extra point of the season and it was 13-0
Indians with 6:13 left in the first quarter.
Hartford struck for its third scoring touchdown of the game with
3:55 remaining, when David Mireles took the handoff four yards for
the touchdown. Juan Perez added the extra point to make it 20-0
Hartford.
The final score of the first quarter came with just seconds left in
the stanza, when Gareth MacMillan scored his second score of the
game on the ground, scoring from 32 yards out for the Indians final
score of the quarter. Juan Perez added the final point of the
quarter via the kick and the Indians led 27-0 after one quarter.
The second quarter saw the Indians outscore the Clippers 14-0 and
put the game on a running clock for the second half.
The first score of the second quarter came from Tony Kucharski, who
took the handoff two yards for the Indians fifth touchdown on the
night. Juan Perez came through for the fourth time via the extra
point kick and it was 34-0 Indians with 8:57 left in the half.
Just four minutes later, with 4:38 left in the half, David Mireles
took the handoff and burned the Martin defense, rushing 47 yards for
the Indians final touchdown of the first half. Juan Perez added one
more extra point kick and the Indians led 41-0 at the half.
Even with a running clock in the third quarter, the Indians added
21 more points to the score, even with some of the second and third
string players in the lineup.
The first score of the second half was from the feet of Lucas
Traver, as the sophomore quarterback scored on the run from four
yards out. Juan Perez added the extra point attempt to make it 48-0
with 8:50 left in the third quarter.
The Indians then added another seven with 4:55 left in the third,
as David Mireles scored his third touchdown of the game, this time
from forty yards out. After Juan Perez kicked his seventh extra
point kick of the game, it was 55-0.
The final score of the game was with 1:10 left in the third quarter
when Casper Aviles took a handoff 26 yards into the end zone for the
Indian touchdown. Juan Perez added the extra point and the Indians
led 62-0 entering the fourth quarter.
The final stanza saw the clock run out rather fast and neither team
scored, as there were only three possessions in the fourth.
The Indians outgained Martin by a 414-40 margin, led by David
Mireles, who rushed for 150 yards on seven carries and three
touchdowns, while Gareth MacMillan added 102 yards on seven carries
and two touchdowns. The Indians did not pass in the game.
The defense was led by John Scherer with seven tackles, while Tony
Kucharski added six tackles and Zach Clauser and Eric Perez added
five tackles each. Casper Aviles and David Mireles had
interceptions.
The Indians, now 1-0 on the season, are back in action this Friday,
September 2nd against New Buffalo at home. Kickoff is set for
7:00 PM. This will be the first game between the two since Hartford
left the Red Arrow Conference after the 2002-2003 school year. The
Bison come in 0-1, losing 50-41 to Bloomingdale last week.
The Clippers, now 0-1 on the season, are back in action this
Thursday, September 1st against Wyoming Lee on the road. Kickoff
is set for 7:00 PM. Martin will be looking to break a 29 game
losing streak this week. The Rebels are 0-1, losing 34-0 to Saint
Joseph Michigan Lutheran last week. |
