Week one for the Varsity
Indians proved the Indians could take on even Class A schools. And
beat them handily. Now that they were in their first game of the SAC
non-conference schedule, they felt they had to prove a point: to
themselves and the rest of the SAC.
Mission accomplished.
The Indians scored all of their 438 total yards on the ground,
while holding Martin to just 119 total yards of total offense, en
route to a 56-8 victory over Martin. The loss continues a skid for
the Clippers dating back to October of 2007, a stretch of 20 games
without a victory.
The Indians kicked it into high gear right from the start on the
off-and-on wet evening with a 21-0 mark in the first quarter.
The first score of the game was courtesy of sophomore running back
Gareth MacMillan, who took the handoff ten yards for the first
Indians score of the evening. Juan Perez kicked the point after
through the uprights and the Indians led 7-0.
After a Martin possession went three-and-out, the Indians struck
again, this time, using the feet of senior Shayne Carlson, who went
through the middle of the Clipper defense six yards to add six to
the Indian total. Perez kicked his second PAT of the evening and it
was 14-0 Indians.
The Indians added one more score in the quarter, again with
Carlson, who went around the left edge for 20 yards for the third
Indian score in the first. Perez added one more point via the PAT
kick and the Indians led 21-0 after one quarter of play.
The second quarter saw the green and white outscore Martin 28-0,
effectively putting the game in the Indians hands before the
halftime whistle fell.
Martin had trouble moving the ball most of the night, only gaining
nine first downs on the night and only having two possessions in
Indians territory, including one in the second quarter which stalled
inside the Indian 20. Martin drove to the Indian 8, before back to
back false start penalties crushed hopes of a score.
The Indians marched on the drive following the stop and scored its
first touchdown of the quarter with Gareth MacMillan scoring his
second touchdown, an 11-yard run. Juan Perez added his fourth PAT
kick of the evening to make it 28-0 Indians.
The second score of the quarter for Hartford came within two
minutes of the first score, as MacMillan scored his second touchdown
of the quarter and third overall, a 51-yard touchdown run. Perez
scored the PAT kick once again to make it 35-0 Hartford.
The third score of the quarter was another run by Shayne Carlson,
his third of the contest and first of the quarter, when he ran in
from 22 yards to score yet another Indian touchdown. Perez kicked
the PAT, once again, to make it 42-0 Hartford.
The final score of the quarter to make it 49-0 Hartford was another
run by the senior Carlson, making it four for the game for him, this
time rushing 64 yards for the touchdown just prior to the halftime
whistle. Perez made his seventh of seven PAT kicks on the evening
and the score was so at half.
The second half saw the clock run for the entire half, as the
Indians held a greater than 35 point lead the entirety of the half.
The third quarter saw only one score, by the second team offense of
Hartford, as they won the quarter by a 7-0 score.
The only score came on the first drive of the quarter and just 20
seconds in, as Shayne Carlson made it five on the night with a
57-yard touchdown run up the left side to pay dirt. Juan Perez
kicked his eighth extra point of the night, making him 15-for-15 on
the season, to make it 56-0 Hartford.
The fourth quarter saw Martin get on the board in the games final
three minutes to win the quarter 8-0, but the Indians won the game
in the end, 56-8.
Martin's only score of the game came on just its second sustained
drive of the night. Senior quarterback Isaac Brenner ran the ball in
from 11-yards out on the left side of the Indian defense for the
touchdown. Martin went for two and converted on the ground with
Colton Petrie to make it eight on the drive, but in the end,
Hartford won.
The Indians outgained Martin by a 438-119 advantage in total
offense, while forcing three turnovers, compared to Martin getting
one turnover.
Shayne Carlson led the Indian attack with 247 yards on 14 carries
and five touchdowns to bring his season total to 480 yards. Gareth
MacMillan added three touchdowns, while gaining 180 yards on 10
carries for the Indians.
Junior John Scherer led the Indian defense with ten tackles, while
senior Ryne Bisnett added nine tackles, including one for a loss.
Interceptions were recorded by Brant Koshar, Matt Najacht and Jared
Meachum for the Indians.
The Indians, now 2-0 on the season, return to the trusty confines
of Indian Stadium this Friday, when they host the Gobles Tigers in
the first of a three-game home stand. The game is set for 7:00 PM.
Hartford defeated Gobles in last seasons game by a 42-8 score. |
