It was beginning to look a
lot like 2009 in Hartford. A Varsity team that started 4-0, then
fell to a 4-5 record to finish the season.
Thank goodness for two years difference. It will not be happening
this time.
Thanks to some timely key, long plays, the Hartford Indians put out
over 400 yards in total offense in taking their first win of the
2011 Southwestern Athletic Conference divisional campaign, a 45-6
winner over Marcellus on their Homecoming last Friday night.
The first quarter was all Indians, as they outscored the host
Wildcats, 13-0, in the first stanza.
The Indians kicked off the scoring via the passing game, when
quarterback Luke Traver hit wide receiver Jimmy Mullins for a 53
yard touchdown reception. Kicker Juan Perez hit the extra point and
the Indians led 7-0.
The other scoring drive of the first quarter was a long run play.
This time, it was Sergio Perez who took the handoff for the Indians,
going 54 yards for the final scoring of the first quarter. The
Indians kick attempt failed and the Indians led 13-0 after one.
Much like the first quarter, the Indians dominated the second
quarter, outscoring Marcellus by a 12-0 margin in the second twelve
minutes.
The first Indian scoring drive of the second quarter came on the
run via Gareth MacMillan, who traveled five yards for the Indians
score. The two point conversion attempt, a rush, failed and the
Indians led 19-0.
The second and final scoring drive of the first half came on a
Sergio Perez one yard dash into the end zone for the fourth Indian
scoring drive of the game. The two point conversion attempt, this
time a pass, failed and the Indians took a 25-0 lead into the half.
The third quarter was, as the first two were, dominated by
Hartford, who outscored Marcellus in the third by a 13-0 margin on
the scoreboard.
The first points of the third quarter came from David Mireles, who
continued his outstanding junior season with a 53 yard touchdown
run. It equaled the second longest touchdown of the game for
Hartford. Juan Perez made his second extra point kick of the game
and the Indians now led 32-0.
The Indians scored their final points of the quarter on a three
yard run from Sergio Perez. The extra point attempt, via a kick, was
no good and the Indians took a 38-0 lead.
The final quarter saw the two teams trade touchdowns, but the
Indians still managed to outscore Marcellus by a 7-6 margin.
The Indians scored the first points of the final stanza, as Junior
Varsity product Miguel Megoloza carried the ball for his first
touchdown on Varsity, a six yard run. Juan Perez kicked the extra
point and the Indians led 45-0.
Marcellus scored the final points of the game, as quarterback Remi
Goodrich carried the ball in from one yard out for the lone Wildcat
score of the game. The extra point kick failed and hence, the 45-6
final score.
The Indian offense was led by the rushing game this week, with
three Indians carrying the ball for more than 100 yards. The Indians
were led by David Mireles, who rushed twelve times for 159 yards and
a touchdown. Sergio Perez added 155 yards and three touchdowns on
eleven carries and Gareth MacMillan added a touchdown and 117 yards
on eleven carries. Luke Traver was one-for-four passing for 53 yards
and the touchdown to Jimmy Mullins.
On defense, the Indians were led by John Scherer, who made fourteen
tackles, while lineman Eric Perez added ten tackles of his own.
The Wildcats were led by Remi Goodrich, who was seven-of-twelve
passing for 78 yards. He rushed for a touchdown as well. Marcus
Pompey and Jared Jones made three receptions in the air for the
Wildcats, as well.
The Indians, now 5-2 on the season, are back in action this Friday,
October 14th against Lawrence at home. It is Homecoming at Hartford
this Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM. The Tigers come in
0-7, losing 61-6 to Lawton last week.
The Wildcats, now 2-5 on the season, are back in action this
Friday, October 14th against Decatur on the road. Kickoff is set for
7:00 PM. The Raiders come in 5-2, losing 50-22 to Watervliet last
week. |
