Web Staff Reports 10/16/2009

The Hartford Indian Varsity Football team came into Marcellus in game eight with one thing on its mind: to keep their playoff hopes alive with a victory.
They left out of the playoffs and a loser of four straight.
The Indians kept even with Marcellus through three quarters, but Marcellus ran their way to nineteen in the fourth, ending Hartford's six game winning streak against them, by a 47-27 score Friday night on Parents Night in Marcellus.
The first quarter saw the score be even at 14 all, as four touchdowns were scored in the period.
The first touchdown came off of the feet of Mike Poczik, who took the ball 31 yards to pay dirt for the first of the four touchdowns in the quarter. Juan Perez added the point after try via the kick and the score was 7-0 Indians.
Marcellus opened their scoring book next, as quarterback Zac Eggerding called his own number, going 27 yards for the first Wildcat points of the game. Kicker Jake Mencl added the extra point try, and the game was tied at 7 all.
Hartford came right back and scored on the next possession of the game, as Mike Poczik scored his second touchdown of the game, this one from just inside his first at 25 yards out. Juan Perez once again kicked an extra point through the uprights and the Indians led 14-7.
Marcellus took just 27 seconds to answer the second Poczik touchdown run, as Zac Eggerding once again scored, this time a 65 yard run. See a pattern here? Jake Mencl added the extra point kick try and the game was at a 14-14 deadlock after one.
The second quarter, much like the first, was a tie, as both teams scored seven points each and the game was tied at the half at 21 all.
Hartford scored the first points of the second via there third rushing touchdown of the night. But this time, it was Cody Westberry who took the handoff just one yard for the touchdown. Juan Perez remained perfect in extra points, now 3/3 on the night, as Hartford grabbed a 21-14 lead.
But like most times all night, it was Marcellus answering yet again and who else could it be but Zac Eggerding scoring? The senior scored his third rushing touchdown on the night, this time from 47 yards after Hartford accepted a 2nd down penalty. Jake Mencl used his left foot to kick his third extra point attempt through the uprights, and that's how the half would finish.

The third quarter battle was won by the Wildcats, as they took a 7-6 advantage in the quarter.
After deferring to the second half on the coin toss, the Indians got the ball first and scored on the feet of one Cody Westberry. The big 6'2" inch lineman turned running back, took the ball across the goal line from three yards out. The difference in the quarter was the fact the Wildcats broke through the Indian line and blocked the extra point. The score was 27-21 in favor of Hartford.
The Wildcats, like all night, answered the call on their next possession, when two seniors, Zac Eggerding and running back Addison Fletter, hooked up on a six-yard touchdown pass in the middle of the end zone. Jake Mencl hit the extra point down the middle and the Wildcats had their first lead of the night at 28-27.
The Indians threw away a chance on a broken play in the third, when Phillip Woodward caught a Matt Najacht pass, but Jake Mencl got to Woodward from behind and forced a fumble at the Wildcat eight yard line, which effectively changed the momentum in the game.
The fourth quarter was all Wildcats, as they pulled away by winning the fourth quarter by a 19-0 margin.
The first score of the quarter was through the air, as Jake Mencl caught a 27 yard touchdown pass from Zac Eggerding, who had a career night. Mencl added another extra point, as he kicked his fifth extra point of the night through the uprights to make it a 35-27 Marcellus lead.
The second touchdown of the quarter was by Addison Fletter, who rushed for his first rushing touchdown (second of the game). This run was from ten yards out. The first extra point Marcellus missed all evening happened on a botched snap and the pass failed. Marcellus lead by a 41-27 score with just six minutes to go.

The final touchdown of the game was by Zac Eggerding, his sixth touchdown of the game (four rushing, two passing), as he scrambled 19 yards for the final score of the game. The extra point kick was blocked but by then, the game was on ice for Marcellus, as they led by a 47-27 score. The Indians couldn't manage much success with the ball in the fourth, leading to their demise.
The Indians had a tough time stopping Zac Eggerding, who rushed for 266 yards and threw for 92 more, while Addison Fletter added 134 more yards and a touchdown for the Wildcats.
For the Indians on offense, Matt Najacht threw for 85 yards, most of which were on the fumbled pass to Phillip Woodward. Shayne Carlson led the Indians rushing attack with 211 yards, while Mike Poczik added 86 yards and two touchdowns.
On defense, Kaleb Kolberg and Shayne Carlson had career nights, each scoring 16 tackles in the loss. Jake Krieger intercepted Zac Eggerding on the only Marcellus turnover of the night.
The Indians, now 4-4 on the season, are in action one final time this season at Indian Stadium, as they take on the Lawrence Tigers in a rivalry game to see. The Indians have defeated Lawrence twelve consecutive times dating back to 1990. The Tigers are 3-5 after a loss to Lawton 34-15 last week. Game time is set for 7:00 PM and it's Parents Night.
