It all came down to a few big plays
by the Cardinals. And a couple of
unfortunate call against the
Indians. It was ballgame.
The Junior Varsity Indians kicked off the season Friday night, but
lost a heartbreaking 29-22 decision
to the host Bloomingdale Cardinals.
The first quarter saw Hartford pull an 8-7 advantage on the board.
Bloomingdale, however, kicked off
the scoring with a one yard goal
line dash, which the Indians could
not stop. The defense had their
chance, however, to stop the drive
with third and 15 and fourth and 5
situations, but could not stop the
rush attack. After the extra point
kick was good, it was 7-0
Bloomingdale.
Just one minute later, the Indians struck right back. David Mireles
took the ball up the visiting
sideline 41 yards for the first
Indian score of the season. The
two-point run by Mireles ended the
scoring for the quarter, as the
Indians led 8-7.
The quarter was full of problems, as the teams split personal
fouls. And Bloomingdale also had a
scoring chance, driving to the
Hartford 44 before fumbling the
ball.
Bloomingdale won the second quarter with a 14-8 victory on the
scoreboard. The scoring was started
by the home team, scoring on a 16
yard run, in which the running back
broke two Indian tackles. The extra
point kick was good and Bloomingdale
led 14-8.
After the teams shared big drives gone bad, Bloomingdale scored in
the final minute of the half with
another 11 yard run by the
Cardinals. The extra point kick was
good, making the kicker
three-for-three and the score was
21-8.
But just seconds later, it was the Indian passing attack that hit
Bloomingdale for a surprise.
Quarterback Luke Traver hit Roy
Brown-Diaz on a streak, a 56 yard
strike, for the touchdown. The two
point conversion pass was good, as
Traver hit Alex Kimp, to make it a
21-16 halftime score.
The final two quarters in the game, outside of two touchdowns in
the third quarter. Bloomingdale won
the half 8-6 to clinch the win.
Hartford struck first in the third, at the 10:04 mark to go, as
David Mireles scored his second
touchdown of the night, a 42 yard
run. The two-point conversion was no
good and the Indians took a slim
22-21 lead.
But, with just three minutes to go in the third, Bloomingdale
struck for the final touchdown of
the game, as they scored for the
fourth time on the night via the
run. They went for two and converted
it, on the run, to make it 29-22
Bloomingdale.
The remainder of the game saw the teams traded fumble follies. The
Cardinals twice fumbled the ball
while driving, once inside the
Indian 15. The Indians had their
chances, turning it over on downs in
Cardinal territory in the games
final minutes. Also, a controversial
call on a punt by the officials
turned the tide as well.
Your Indian Junior Varsity, now 0-1, plays Berrien Springs this
Wednesday at 6:30 PM in Berrien
Springs. |
