Game 8 Recap:
Hartford 50, Lawrence 38 |
With just two games remaining in the season
for the Hartford JV Football team, the team
wanted to go out on a high note, giving
them some sort of optimism for next season.
If they wanted any optimism, they sure got it in a big way Thursday
night. Backed by an offense that racked up
469 yards, 409 of which was on the ground,
the Indians scored 38 first half points and
held on for a 50-38 win Thursday night in
Lawrence.
The first quarter saw Lawrence out score the Indians, eight to six.
After Hartford won the toss and deferred to
the Tigers for the second half, the Tigers
couldn't muster an early march. Their drive
was stopped by a punt. And for the first
time in several weeks, the Indians scored
first. That's because with 5:21 to go in the
first quarter, Austin Snedden scored one of
his three touchdowns on the evening, this
one from five yards out. The two point
conversion failed and the Indians were ahead
6-0 early. Lawrence answered back on its
next possession from three yards out. The
two point conversion on the ground was
converted, giving Lawrence its first lead at
8-6. That's the way the quarter would end.
The second saw the Indians turn it up, as they outscored the Tigers,
32-8. Hartford began the quarter with the
ball and went down the field, scoring at the
10:54 to go mark in the second, giving the
Indians back the lead. That was the second
touchdown of the evening scored by Austin Snedden. Hartford then converted the two
point conversion, as Matt Najacht hit Brant
Koshar and the Indians led 14-8.
After the next Lawrence drive stalled and forced the Tigers to turn
it over on downs, Hartford took
advantage. At the 7:24 mark left in the
half, Shayne Carlson carried it in from 57
yards out, the Indians longest rushing TD of
the season, giving them a 20-8 lead over
Lawrence. The two point conversion was
converted once again after Matt Najacht hit
Logan Brown on the sideline and Brown made a
superb diving catch to give the Indians a
22-8 lead.
After the next Lawrence drive saw them score eight points on a one
yard run and a two point conversion,
Hartford quickly answered back. Using the
run to their advantage, the Indians put it
in using the feet of quarterback Matt
Najacht, who ran in from one yard. A two
point conversion pass followed the TD, with
Najacht hooking up with Austin Snedden to
give Hartford a 30-16 lead.
When another Lawrence drive stalled via the interception, Hartford
needed to quickly take it down the field and
score again. And they accomplished that,
when Austin Snedden ran for his third TD of
the evening with :17 to go, a six yard run,
to give the Indians a 36-16 lead. And the
Indians then converted the two point
conversion. Once again, the pass worked, as
Matt Najacht hit Phillip Woodward to give
the Indians a 38-16 halftime lead.
The third saw just five drives, but saw Lawrence out score the
Indians, 14-0. That's because Hartford, who
started the half out with the ball, saw the
ball get turned over on an interception. And
Lawrence then capitalized on the Indians
mistake, scoring on a two yard run. After
they converted a two point conversion using
the run, the scoreboard read 38-24 for the
Indians. Following a Hartford punt, the
Tigers took control again. Using the run of
their own, the Tigers scored on another two
yard run. Only this time, the Indians
stopped the two point conversion and the
score read after three, Hartford 38,
Lawrence 30.
The final quarter saw the Indians sew up the win, outscoring
Lawrence, 12-8. That's because after wasting
the rest of the time in the third, the
Indians kept the ball to start the fourth.
And then they scored at the 9:18 to go mark,
when Matt Najacht rushed for his second TD
of the evening, this one from two yards out,
giving the Indians a 44-30 lead. But on its
next drive, Lawrence responded with a
touchdown of its own, this one on the run
from five yards out, giving them some hope.
And after they converted the two point
conversion using the run, Lawrence got back
within six at 44-38. The Indians then put it
away on its next drive, when Shayne Carlson
scored his second touchdown, a 21 yarder, to
give the Indians the final points of the
evening. The final ended Hartford 50,
Lawrence 38, giving the Indians their second
win of the campaign.
For the game, Matt Najacht was four of five passing for 60 yards
and an interception. Shayne Carlson was the
"Player of the Game", rushing 31 times for
315 yards, while Austin Snedden added 87
yards. Logan Brown, Snedden, Phillip
Woodward and Brant Koshar added receptions
for Hartford. Woodward and Mike Wolfenbarger
led the Indian defense with 10 tackles each.
The Indians final game was to take place on Thursday, October 18,
but was stormed out by a dangerous weather
situation. The game will not be made
up, so the Lawrence game was the final game
of the season. |

Game Notes: Carlson's 315
yards was more than 3/4 of the Indians total
yards...the Indians committed five penalties
on the evening, accounting for 40
yards...the Indians found out after the game
they would play Bloomingdale in the SAC
Crossover game, thus, the Indians were to
travel to Bloomingdale on Thursday
night, but once again, weather plagued the
Indians...the Indians had had two games
already
shortened by weather this year. |
